The best way to determine which currency pairs are going to go up or down is by determining which have higher or lower prices than compared to both 1 month and 3 months ago. Here is a little secret: in recent years, the USD, and to a lesser extent the Euro, have trended more consistently and strongly than any other currency. This may be due to fundamentals, or alternatively it might be that the global reserve currencies have propensities to trend steadily.

Trading in the direction of the 3 month movement gives a winning profitable edge. Entries for such a strategy work best not as breakouts or pull-backs, but on pull-backs that have already begun to turn strongly back in the direction of the trend. Do not try to buy cheap or right at the new high, it is OK if the price is trending the same on all time frames from hourly and above.

For example, a strategy which would enter a long trade upon a crossover of a fast EMA past a slower SMA, while the price is above longer-term simple moving averages, all filtered by the price being above its levels from 1 months and 3 months ago, will produce an edge on all the major USD pairs over the past 15 years, with the exception of the USD/CHF pair.

Another possible additional filter is to use a “best of momentum” filter where you trade only those currency pairs that have moved the furthest over the past 3 months, say the top five or six currency pairs.

A Trend Following Strategy’s Stop Loss Levels.

Stop losses are best placed as a function of volatility, i. e. as the average true range (ATR) of the last X days. The ATR of the past 20 days is commonly used. You may wish to use anything from half the ATR to 3 times the ATR (the latter is the classic amount). However for Forex, 3 times is probably too large to capture anything except the very largest trends. The ATR is probably a better measurement but whether you use half, one, one and a half or whatever, it all tends to even up over time. What is most important is to be consistent.

A Trend Following Strategy’s Take Profit / Trade Exit Methods.

Take profit targets / trade exits are a more problematic subject. There are several alternatives:

Trailing stop losses / trailing take profit – consulte Mais informação.

Slowly moving up stop losses and letting all profitable trades be taken out by hitting stops eventually. Support or resistance levels may be used in a discretionary way, or the high / low of the past X days, for example. This can help let the big winners run without exiting prematurely.

Moving your stop loss to breakeven at a certain point. This can protect against unnecessary losses, but must be used with extreme care, as moving your stop loss to breakeven too quickly will lead to getting stopped out of big winners just before they get going. It is very common for the price to re-test a common entry zone before taking off. If you are going to move your stop loss to breakeven, it is better to either do so after a fixed period of time (not less than 48 hours), or after a certain amount of floating profit has been achieved.

Fixed profit targets by multiples of risk, usually with scaling out. For example, if you know that historically the positive expectancy of a trend-following strategy only begins at 3 units, you might decide to take partial profits at 3 units, following by more at 5, 10 or whatever.

Time-based exits can work surprisingly well, usually with scaling. For example, take partial profits at 1 month from entry, 3 months, 6 months etc. This can also help limit losses, where the price is below the entry level after 48 hours, but has not yet hit the stop.

Other Trend Trading Issues.

You may want to have a maximum number of trades that may be open at any one time and in the same direction regarding any one currency. Although this may limit total overall profits, it can help you trade more profitably as:

When the market is flat, you won’t be opening new trades all the time when there are small whipsaws.

It limits the maximum possible amount you can lose in the event of a major market reversal and/or wild market conditions.

Trend Trading can be difficult psychologically because you have to be prepared to sit still and hope that winning trades grow and grow without panicking and taking profits too early. You also need to keep going through losing streaks, which might test your faith in your strategy.

A Range-Trading Strategy’s Trade Entries.

A range-trading strategy is good for small but relatively consistent profits, hopefully going some way to smoothing out the losing streaks that trend-following strategies go through.

As it is known that the USD and EUR tend to trend, it is worth considering only trading this kind of strategy with non-USD and possibly also non-EUR currency crosses.

These currency crosses tend to range i. e. revert to the mean, especially on a weekly basis. Therefore a good entry signal might be given by a strong up or down week whose range is say at least 1.5 times greater than the average true range of the previous 4 weeks. There is an edge in trading the following week in the opposite direction.

Below is a sample long entry, showing an hourly chart where the 5 period EMA crosses above the 10 period SMA, while the price is above the 40, 240, and 1,200 period simple moving averages. Entry points are marked:

There are a few possibilities. First of all, you could just enter the trade at the beginning of the following week, with a stop loss of X times the 4 week ATR, or some other multiple. Alternatively, you could try to enter after overbought or oversold conditions reverse in the desired direction.

A Trend Following Strategy’s Take Profit / Trade Exit Methods.

Time-based exits tend to work best here. Just close any open position at the end of the week, as the strategy is based on weekly mean reversion.

You might want to add your own view on economic fundamentals as a filter, perhaps by slightly increasing the size of any trade entries that are in the same direction as your fundamental outlook. For example, it has been shown that currencies with higher interest rates tend to rise against currencies with lower interest rates, at least over the short-term.

Before you commit to a long-term wealth building strategy, make sure that you back test the strategy or strategies that you are planning to use. Take care not to assume that the past is going to be too similar to the future. The purpose of a back test is to give you an idea of the probabilities of various scenarios happening. For example if you back test 15 years of historical data, you can extract a few thousand hypothetical years of results from that, and see that you had X% change of making Y% profit or loss in an average year.

It is vital that you see what the worst results were over a long period of time. You can use this as a safety margin and plan how much you will risk per trade (your risk management method) based upon these statistics. You can also use it as a rough guide for what you can expect to go through in the future.

Make sure that you leave a recent year or two out of your back test. Then, finalize the strategy and “forward test” it on that year or two. If the results are wildly different from what your back test indicated, this suggests that your strategy is over-optimized.

This might seem like a lot of work, but if you are planning to make money and risk your savings, this might be the most important financial thing you ever do in your life. You will need to be sure that your trading plan works, otherwise you will risk giving up through self-doubt arising during losing streaks. In trading, it is the traders that do their homework that usually win in the end. You can do a lot of this testing with excel. It might be worth paying a computer programmer a few hundred dollars, if that is going to help you make a million in the long run!

You might ask, if it is possible to turn $10,000 into $1 million in 10 years, how about turning $1,000 into $1 million? This is sadly going too far, unless you use your judgement successfully at a really fantastic level, and are prepared to take extremely high levels of risk. Turning $1,000 into $1 million is practically unheard of. Jesse Livermore did achieve this feat in relative terms, turning 500 shares into something like $100 million in the 1920s. However it tends to be forgotten now that he went bankrupt several times in the process, and was only able to come back because of wealthy benefactors lending him money. So before you try to turn $1,000 into $1 million, consider whether anyone is going to give you another $1,000 when you blow your account!

Zero to $1 Million in 18 Months Forex Trading.

What if I let you follow along, looking over my shoulder every step, and show you how to use forex trading to go from Zero to $1 million in 18 months ? Sound like fun?

Is it possible, as a forex trader, to go from nothing – start from absolute scratch, zero funds – to being a millionaire in 18 months? That’s right, I said 18 months (or less – I vote for less, because I have no patience at all, really). IS that possible? Well, I think I can safely promise you this much – It should certainly be an interesting journey finding out.

Sure, this is probably insane, but I’m crazy enough to try it if you guys are interested in watching me try it.

I’ve laid the groundwork already: Starting from scratch, no cash at all, the first thing we have to do if we’re going to trade the currency markets is to raise a trading stake. Well, I already did that part. Como? By taking paid surveys online, every day for a month, making about a whopping one dollar a day for what often took several hours of work a day. It’s not a good way to make money, but if you have absolutely nothing, it IS a way to make money. So, I’ve raised a starting stake of about $50. I would never recommend that anyone commence forex trading with anything less than at least $100, but since I’m being crazy here, I might as well be a bit reckless, too.

Okay, we’re going to make a million dollars (or more).

We’re going to do it in 18 months (or less).

And we’re going to start with virtually nothing ($50).

Trading strategies are key.

Now, HOW are we going to accomplish this? Well, obviously we’re going to be doing some serious day trading because to achieve our goal, we’re going to need to multiply our trading capital quickly and consistently. Specifically, I plan to utilize a trading strategy that I have used profitably before, trading primarily on the 15-minute time frame. However, I’m sure that I’ll be mixing in hourly, 4-hour, and daily charts as well. And as we go along, of course, I’ll share my basic trading strategy with you (for FREE!). There will probably be some gambling involved. Here and there, I’ll take a shot at top picking, bottom picking, and just taking the occasional blind flyer (“Why don’t we sell Usd/Nok today, just for fun?”). Trying to make a million dollars in 18 months necessarily means taking some risks. However, I will (hopefully) stick with the basic trading strategy I have in mind. Actually, I have two strategies in mind, but the second one is designed for trading the 4-hour time frame, and we’ll need to increase our trading stake a bit before we can move up to trading that time frame.

Now, how can you follow along with me on this adventure? I thought I’d do something like link the account to MyFxbook, where you can see all the trades made in the account as they happen. If anyone has a better idea, please feel free to leave a comment and let me know – I’m open to suggestions. I’ll also report in right here, at least every week or two, on how things are going and what my current thinking is on how best to move forward.

I’m open to suggestions on trading strategies to use. If you have a great strategy that you believe will help us achieve our million dollar goal, please share it – I can’t guarantee that I’ll use it, but I will seriously consider any suggestion. I definitely want your input and help with this. I mean, this is basically a pretty crazy idea, so someone injecting some sanity into the project will likely be helpful.

So, do I really believe this is possible? Well, sure, it’s possible . My personal guess is that we’ll come up a bit short, but so what if we only make $500,000, or even just $100,000? – That’s still a pretty nice paycheck for 18 months of work, right? But for the moment, let’s just stick with our goal of at least millionaire status.

If we pull off this miracle, it will be by the grace of God. I believe wholeheartedly in the axiom quoted by Benjamin Franklin as he urged prayer upon the Continental Congress, noting, “They labor in vain that build a house unless the Lord build it.” (Psalm 127, verse 1)

I sincerely hope with all my heart that we do succeed. I hope for success not just for my sake (I could use a quick million – pay a few bills), but for your sake, too, for all of you reading this and coming along on this journey with me. I want us all to succeed – to find a pathway that leads to financial salvation in this economy that’s crumbling beneath our feet, where jobs and job security are more and more difficult to come by. I believe that forex trading offers that financial salvation. It is, in my not-so-humble opinion, the last road to riches for the “regular guy” (or girl).

Okay, now I’m only going to attempt this if YOU are truly interested in it – so please take just a minute or two to comment below and let me know your thoughts on this. If it’s something that YOU are sincerely interested in watching and following, then I’m certainly willing to give it a try (as noted previously, I’m a little bit crazy). Sounds like fun to me, but what do you think? I’ll wait for your comments, but in the meantime, I’ll go ahead and be working on setting up the account and finalizing the trading strategy. If I’m encouraged to proceed by your comments, then I’ll report back here in just a week or two with all the initial information you’ll need to follow along to learn how you can go from zero to $1 million in 18 months in forex trading by deploying two or more trading strategies.

Very interesting concept. My ‘gut’ reaction is absolutely no way you can take nothing and make a million.

Then I read how you have raised your initial capital, so its no longer a question of trading from nothing. You have raised your starting capital from non trading activity (kind of a cheat, but I’ll forgive you)

So, d I think you can get from 50 to a million?

Would I have believed you if you stated you were going to go from ten thousand to a million? Yes I would.

& # 8211; that is a strange set of perceptions.

Why do I believe you could increment two zeros but not four?

So, now having examined my perceptions I realise they are totally illogical. If you successfully trade you $50 to $55 or $60 in month 1 and then up to $100 by month 3, you’ll be able to attract further investments from other people who want a part of your amazing performance (you have to look at the percentage increases, not the dollar value. 100% in 3 months, is 400% a year, assuming consistent performance over the medium term.)

If you said to me, hey would you like to make 100% annual return on your investment with me, I’d jump at it (in-fact I’d jump at an offer of 50% pa). Get enough small dollar value investors (5000 people at $50 each would do, not that difficult given the reach of “winners edge” web site) together to increase your trading capital to say $250k, to whom you pay about a quarter of your overall annual winnings and you’ld do it!

So in the space of half a dozen sentences I have completely changed my mind form ‘No it cant be done’ to ‘Yes, I believe you can do it’!

I’d be interested in reading about progress, should you decide to go ahead.

All that remains is for me to say ‘good luck & good trading’, best.

Is this similar to the wonder of compounding? Of course it should work, providing iron discipline is employed. Count me in!

I was teaching a friend how to trade, and he practiced in a demo account, and made a fortune…then he opened up a live account, and I couldn’t help but smile the next day when he remarked, “It’s a lot harder to pull the trigger and put a trade on when it’s real money”.

I hate turning a profit in a demo account – it always just makes me want to kick myself for not doing the trade for real money. 🙂

Good point, Allison – trying this with only 50:1 leverage would be, well, annoying. Not impossible, but annoying.

Back to our “slow learner” conversation elsewhere, I finally learned to be out of the market during the monthly NFP when the market jumped my stop (which was already 50 pips away from the current price) by almost 100 pips. If you’re right on the NFP (and don’t get stopped out by a spike in the opposite direction), it’s great – but if you’re wrong, it’s murder. The only time I get any pleasure from the NFP now is when I think I would have been long Gbp/Usd, and it drops 200 pips – “Man, glad I didn’t buy that junk”. 🙂

This sounds like an awesome idea! I opened up a demo with your broker with $500 (e. g. wanted to use a realistic amount in the demo) and am right at 580 this week. I will NOT trade NFP tomorrow, though I have some trades open in other accounts I’ll be watching. I’m headed to Africa next week so trading will be very hit or miss if at all. Which is a bummer since post NFP often opens up some nice spaces for trades. When I get back we should email about strategies. I’m not familiar with yours and trade a fair amount of divergence myself a la Rob Booker.

I do think it’s worth mentioning that one really needs to be able to use an offshore account to do this. While my US accounts are chugging along in the positive, it is VERY VERY slow going with the 50:1 leverage. Like if I had to make that feed me I’d not be eating.

I hope we will have the pleasure to dicuss these topics infuture. About four years ago it was a german guy who was trying to make 1million € from 1000€ in the end he acived 7000% return which was even great.

This should be a very interesting project. I intend to follow it as close as possible. If you could even make the 10 to 20K mark in the 18 months, just think what is then possible in 5 years. A very BOLD challenge, this would give a new definition to “anything is possible”. You have my respect !

This is really a fantastic idea, that many people most probably will encourage you to do. Will we be able to join your trades? eg through openbook (etorro), or other social trading?? Which 2 strategies will you use? are they explained somewhere in detail?

If the Trader ‘John Carter’ can make 1 million in one trade, why shouldn’t we be able to make one million in 18 month? People who say this is not possible, are people that aren’t worth trading.

I would definitely be interested in following this as it progresses. I think this is probably what we all secretly want to be able to do… turn very little into a large sum of money. I definitely do. I only have a small trading account and would like to make it grow big in a similar time scale. I will be watching closely to pick up any tips and hints on how to be a better trader. Go for it Jack.

I know that starting with $100 you can reach $100.000 in 10 months just by doubling the balance every month, and $1m in 13 to 14 months.

I consider it relatively easy for the first few months, but while the balance increases the.

Seriously, you’re quite right, there will be those problems when the account hopefully does reach the higher dollar levels…but I’ll be happy if we GET TO the problems at that level. But that’s definitely a topic to address at some point – It is indeed a different ball game risking $20,000 rather than $5.

You raise an interesting point, Ayaz. Someone above mentioned “patience”, and that will indeed be important, especially In the beginning when it may seem like it takes forever just to get from $50 to, say, $500. But if we can work this properly, it will be surprising how quickly we can then move from $500 to $5,000, and then even faster from $5,000 to $50,000. The growth rate (assuming the trading plan works) will be exponential, that is, growing faster and faster as we progress.

Oi. I think that is more than possible to trade an acc from 50$ to 1million. but there are two problems 1. You will need a steady growth of more than 3% on a daily basis. 2. When you will have an account bigger than 750k depending on your risk tolerance you need to accept loses of 7k 15k or even 20k on some days, and than you will need to make profits bigger than 20-25k daily. These will be the problem, how to realoses of 7k 15k or even 20k on some days, and than you will need to make profits bigger than 20-25k daily. These will be the problem, how to react on such big price oscillations ! Anyway i wish u luck on your new mission and i will be with u and follow through 🙂

Greetings first of all… Well I read through your article and I see some very serious conditional attitude that “What if” you able to pull this off… I mean… What’s the harm in it… Because going from 100k to 1million may sound very interesting but the risk appetite is substantial… I thoroughly believe if you can make ur account grow from 100k to 1 million or more then why not from the smaller account ?

Initially may be it will take more time to from from 50usd to may be 1,000 or 10,000usd but I will call this victory even if someone can get to 10k. What mostly we do not realise is the patience invlove to grow from very small to medium… By the time u r near 10k or plus ur strategy and trading experience will be so much that it will become absolutely possible once u cross 10k barrier…

I’m all in to trade live with you… Seriously sometimes we spend 50usd just for nothing so why not try something that’s has something extraordinary to offer… I’ll consider it a lottery ticket… So jack I’m all up for it… Just do it.

RI MUITO! Jack - I AM NOT laughing AT you! Please don’t be insulted, it’s just that I seem to have put myself in a bad position ! I’ve kept my eyes out for different ways to make money online, and sometimes the demonstration/pitch is in the form of a video, sometimes a webinar, and most recently, many marketers have also been using Google+ Hangouts. Although I’ve signed up to watch some of these and actually attended by clicking the link to attend, I have NO idea how they’re set up or conducted, LOL ! And if i could put you in touch with someone who knows how it’s done and can explain it to you, I surely will. I guess I assumed that most people who have digital products and services knew how to do such things, or had staff that were technical and could set it up. Lemme see if I can find someone to reply to your request instead of just hoping you’ll be able to figure it out off of some YouTube video, since a live person can explain it better I’m sure !

Is it possible to go from $50 to $500 ?….most people would say yes as it is within their belief system, hey it’s only an extra $450 bucks……so is it possible to go from $10,000 to say $100,000 ?

For sure, it’s the same percentage increase as $50 to $500, it’s just a matter of scaling up and repeating over and over the same strategy. $100,000 to $ 1 Million……..well you get the picture.

My favourite saying is based upon the most basic law of geometry that we were all taught in school.

I am intrigued by the Break Even is the worst result strategy espoused by Joe Nemeth using hedging techniques. This might be an opportunity to test it out.

Well, not ALL day. Seriously, about the longest I ever trade is the entirety of the London session – but usually I try to just work either the London morning session OR the New York morning session. If I can open up at 7 AM and turn a nice profit by 7:45, I’m perfectly happy to call it a day and go ahead and turn off my screen.

I am able to hedge (my broker is outside the U. S., thank God), and probably will at some point along the way. Good thought, thanks.

Thanks, Gregg – My thought is that, as long as I can manage to stumble along without completely blowing out the account, (A) there should be some valuable trading lessons learned along the way, and (B) even if we don’t make a million, we might still turn a very nice profit.

I am game. Sounds like an interesting experiment. As long as it does not implies working on the screen all day. And I am on GMT so that may make it a bit hard for me. Assuming you are not on or close to GMT.

I am sure it is possible and I am already working on a trading plan to achieve this. I believe that forex trading is extremely simple buy we humans make it extremely complicated and difficult including myself . Its all about discipline and patience and taking the word greed out of the equation.

I will be interested to see the plan as it will be very hard to take an account from $50 to 1 million. Heck, taking it from $50 to even $10,000 would be quite impressive in 18 months. I’m guessing normal risk mgmt. principles will be out the window on this one. If you catch a great trend it may be possible but the risk of blowing up is going to be hard to overcome and that is one risk you will definitely have to take, at least initially. It would be great if you have a process for notifying those who want to follow the trades as they happen (text, email, discussion board, something else real time) so we can truly participate with you. Heck, I’ll risk $50 to give it a go. Looking forward to seeing more about this endeavor!

“0 to 1 million in 18 months” sounds like a crazy idea, especially considering WET ideology. But sometimes the craziest ideas are more successful then the common ones.

I will definitely join this program if WET will launch it. I think for anyone it will be extremely difficult to find another opportunity to build huge capital by risking only $50-100.

For me personally it will be huge experience and great success reaching even 10.000-20.000 from $100.

I am VERY interested, Jack. All I have to start with is 50.00 to 100.00, myself, so I would be interested in what strategies you use, and how you do.

I am so glad you touched upon this for 1 main reason: Americans, and everyone else for that matter, need to take personal responsibility for their own financial well being. Período. NOT reliance on government, but reliance on financial astuteness and thus investing. Ideally, I wish you had a simple system of indicators or proprietary software that would indicate where to get in and when to get out. I wouldn’t mind doing the trades live with you if you held them on a Google hangout, and alerted us via text messages when you’re actually going to be trading. However, I’d need to get set up with an account and actually learn how to place a trade too, But if I had that info, I’d like to trade along with you, learning as I go, and scaling up the profits. I don’t know why the creators of forex programs don’t just offer a service like that if they don’t offer mirror trading software. I really like your idea, especially that you’re starting small and hope to snowball it relatively quickly, which is something I think many people will appreciate.

This is very interesting & I believe its possible to achieve the results you speak of. I would love the opportunity to share the risk/profits somehow & I’m sure other trades would too.

Thanks for jumping in here. Actually yes we do teach safe and sound trading principles in forex and we truly believe in them. However, we also believe that diversification is important and that traders should have low risk accounts as well as high risk. With that being said it is possible to transfer funds made in high risk account to a low risk account. Just remember as Jack states he is conducting an experiment with low starting capital.

Experiments in trading are also extremely important as long as you have your testing methods setup in advance.
